Ooga Booga!

Yes, friends, This is FIBS-O-NACCI !
The FIBS-O-NACCI pyramid tournament is an ongoing tournament played on FIBS.

It is a pyramid shaped structured ladder tournament where you play against the other players and move up the pyramid as you win matches. When you move into the top levels of the pyramid you will be awarded session points for your wins and in accumulating points you can win the FIBS-O-NACCI session.

It's a fun way to meet new fibsters and play matches against people from all over the world.

If you are unfamiliar with FIBS, it is a free online backgammon server which is fun and easy to use. Visit the site www.fibs.com for more information, or just download a client (javafibs is a good one) and GO !

What is FIBS-O-NACCI?
FIBS-O-NACCI is a moderate paced highly competitive ladder pyramid where players compete to get to higher levels of the structure. If you're not constantly climbing, you'll end up being pushed down into insignifigance. It was created by donzaemon to promote a stronger community at FIBS and inspired by some constant nagging by vegasvic about how he wanted a ladder tournament.

In a structured ladder bracket, new players and all fibsters, not just the usual suspects you commonly run across, end up playing each other and expanding the fibs community.

As the ladder was being created it was realized that it would probably be much more interesting if it took the shape of a pyramid, so that it could be climbed somewhat faster and more different opponents would be encountered on a regular basis. As various pyramid structures were contemplated, the idea of using a fibonacci sequenced level structure came out of the sky like a lightning bolt and showed itself to be the most beautiful and practical way to get things done and accomplish these goals.... and so it was decided.

So be it.

Amen.

Our pyramid now has 1 player at the top in the number one spot, 1 player below him in the number 2 spot, 2 below him, 3 below them, 5 on the next level , then 8 , 13, 21 ... and on and on in a fibonacci sequence for however many players want to enter. If you don't know what a 'fibonacci' sequence is, please google it before mailing me and telling me how stupid it is.

I want to give very special thanks to souptree, one of the many pioneers of web based tournaments in fibs and his team league tournaments. Without his wonderful example of an awesome web tournament I may have never decided to do anything like this. I hope that his bright example can spur more and various other such pages and/or create a whole culture of new people breeding better ideas for more and more FIBS fun. Thanks soup.

Quick Start
Here is basically what you have to do to get started on FIBS-O-NACCI

1) be a member of FIBS (if you're not already it's completely free and easy, you just need some client software, click Here for more information.

2) sign up as a member on this page (free and safe) using your fibs username as your username here

3) log in to this site, so that it shows your username at the top of the page

4)Go to the 'Join / Quit Events' page and sign up for one of the pyramids

5) look on the 'Current' page to see if you have any current matches that need to be played ( it may take a few days to get a match if you are completely new)

6) Play your matches, preferrably on FIBS

7) Report your results on the 'Current' page

That's all, you will climb the pyramids the more you win

What ?
I'm glad you asked that silly question.

What happens is, you sign up on this page using your FIBS nick as your username. This is very important because FIBS-O-NACCI will use fibs messages to you in order to inform you of your opponents. After you have signed up, you go to the 'Join / Quit Events' section and choose the pyramid you want to play in, click in, and it will put you at the bottom of the pyramid.
It will then find you an opponent when the next play period begins and you will begin play. You will play up to three matches each play period for as long as you want to participate.

The play will be ongoing, but the scoring sessions will be decided durations, so you will not have to worry about when you start playing. If you join during the middle of a session just try to get a good position for the next scoring session AND the points that you do collect will be converted into Nacci Points when the session ends so you don't really lose anything by not playing a full session.

That's all. The object of the tournament is to get as high as you can in the pyramid and collect as many session points as you can by staying at a high level.
With enough players participating, your FIBS-O-NACCI standing may even be a better indicator of of your play level than your FIBS rating because the play will be more diversified creating more normalized results.

How does it work ?
The server will assign you between 1 and 3 opponents both above you and below you in the bracket. Each time you win a match, you will either advance or hold your position, depending on whether your opponent was above or below you.
When you win against an opponent in the next higher bracket, you will move up one level in the pyramid and get closer to the top. You will also get extra session points if you finish the round in a level that qualifies for them.
When you win against an opponent below you, you will hold your position and possibly get Nacci Points if you finish the period in a high enough level to receive them.

You can probably guess by now that when you lose, you will also either hold your position or move down. If you lose to a player above you, nothing happens, you basically stay where you are, but if you lose to a player below you, you will lose your position and automatically move down to the bracket he was in, while he moves up to yours. Don't be fooled, however, by the notion of holding your ground when you lose, everybody is fighting for the higher spots in the pyramid, so there is a stong gravity that will pull you down if you are not actively winning your matches.

All matches have to be played and posted within the designated play period. If a match goes unposted at the end of the period, it is a non-played match.
When a match is unposted and considered "not played", BOTH players involved will lose ground and have their penalty size increased (which may result in a penalty when the window closes).

Let's do it !
Wonderful. I was thinking exactly the same thing.

The only requirement is that you have fun and meet new people. Oh, remember to sign up here with your EXACT FIBS NICK and don't do the couple of no-no's outlined in the rules section.

Thanks for playing, go get some Nacci Points.
